9- August 1- August 7, 2021Grizzly Bear Boat Tour–Katmai Coast of Alaska with fellow professional photographer and friend, Josh Miller. www.joshmillerphotography.com
Each day our privately chartered boat will move along the famed Katmai coast of Alaska following the salmon run and grizzlies to find the most optimum light and bear activity. We will sleep and eat on our ship, but make several shore excursions each day. Remember it’s summer in Alaska, so we will have nearly twenty-four hours of daylight.
Besides having me as your photography guide, we will be working with world-famous bear guide Drew Hamilton, who knows the individual bears by sight and will not only keep us safe but also teach us about bear behavior and help set us up in the best photo locations. Drew is one of the main people involved in the fight against the Pebble Mine project, which would be one of the world’s largest open-pit mines right on the border of Katmai and Lake Clark National Parks. If opened, the mine would directly impact the survival of this prime bear habitat. See separate flier!
The trip will meet in Homer, Alaska, on the evening of August 1 for a welcome dinner before we board our ship and sail overnight to the Katmai coast. For the next five days we will eat, sleep, and photograph bears, before cruising back to Homer. This trip offers one more day of shooting than most bear tours in the area, and with luck and weather we may get a bit of photography time on our sailing days as well. The trip will cost $8900, with all meals, guiding, lodging, image review sessions, and laughs included. Your only on-trip responsibilities will be drinks you would like to buy or tips you would like to give the guides. While this trip is slightly more expensive than lodge-based bear workshops, the ability of the boat to set us up in different locations with different backgrounds each day means you will come home with a far deeper body of work than from one single location–plus it’s a cruise!
Chartering a boat and putting together a trip like this with such an experienced bear guide is truly a chance of a lifetime. Sharing with my friend Josh and his clients, the trip will likely sell out shortly.
